Marietta Cobb Museum of Art

The Marietta Cobb Museum of Art is housed in a Greek revival–style structure built in 1909 on the square in downtown Marietta, some twenty miles northwest of Atlanta. Through the exhibition, interpretation, collecting, and presentation of works of American art, Marietta Cobb Museum of Art hopes to inspire, engage, and educate a diverse population. Until 1963, the facility held the Marietta post office, and then the town library until 1989. The Georgia Council for the Arts, the City of Marietta, and Cobb County finance the museum, which was founded in 1990 by a group of art patrons. The only metropolitan Atlanta fine arts museum specializing in 19th and 20th-century American art. This renowned visual arts institution, MCMA hosts quarterly rotating exhibitions of American art in all mediums throughout the year. The Marietta/Cobb Museum’s permanent collection consists mostly of nineteenth- and twentieth-century American art. Winslow Homer Facing Nature, the Wyeth family display, the Paul Jones Show (a collection of African and African American art), and Tell It Like It Is: Photojournalism in the Post-Modern World, which featured works by numerous area artists, were among the museum’s previous exhibitions. Dale Chihuly (glasswork) and Martha Simkins (painting) are two nationally and regionally famous artists who are shown at the museum. The Permanent Collection of the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art has been established mostly via gifts from wealthy arts supporters in the Metro-Atlanta region. The collection consists of approximately 600 works of art, which are on show throughout the Museum throughout the year. Throughout the year, the museum organizes a range of events, activities, and educational opportunities. The courthouse sequences in the 2014 film Selma were filmed at this location.
